Sustainability in Every Step: From Farm to Fork, We Care

Freshtoday is committed to sustainable school meals Ireland’s schools and families can feel good about. Here in Donegal, that means chilled deliveries regenerated locally at our Letterkenny and Buncrana facilities, short final-mile routes, and sourcing from trusted local producers across the North West, all to reduce our environmental footprint while keeping every meal fresh and nutritious.

Local, Responsible Sourcing

We prioritise local sourcing wherever possible and choose ingredients that are in season, helping to reduce food miles while supporting local suppliers and communities. Where local and Irish produce has a limited seasonal range, we look further afield to ensure we can offer a varied menu throughout the year. Our suppliers and ingredients are selected with quality, traceability and responsible sourcing in mind, so schools can feel confident in the food we provide.

Sustainable Packaging Solutions

We continually review our packaging to reduce waste and eliminate single-use plastics wherever possible. Currently, we use fully compostable containers for hot meals and are introducing recyclable or compostable options for cold meals and snacks. We actively collaborate with packaging partners to trial innovative, eco-friendly solutions while ensuring that all our packaging meets strict food safety requirements and maintains the temperature and quality of each meal.

Smarter Logistics & Delivery

Our Donegal delivery model minimises environmental impact while keeping meals fresh and on time. Chilled meals arrive on consolidated runs and are regenerated locally at our Letterkenny and Buncrana facilities, reducing long daily mileage across the county. From there, we plan short, efficient final-mile routes to schools, cut empty returns through smart load planning, and use telematics and anti-idling practices to lower fuel use and emissions.

Industry Leading School Meal Providers

From innovative menus to sustainable sourcing, Freshtoday continues to lead the way in shaping the future of school meals in Ireland.

Transparent Labelling You Can Trust

At Freshtoday, every meal comes with a clear, personalised label for safety and peace of mind. Each label shows the student’s name, the dish, and full allergen and nutritional information, making it easy to identify and safe to enjoy. We also include production traceability details, so parents, students, and schools can trust that every dish is handled with care from kitchen to classroom.

For parents, this means peace of mind knowing that their child’s school meals are made with wholesome produce. For schools, it means being part of a sustainable food chain that strengthens Irish agriculture while delivering consistent, high-quality meals every day.
